Are Game Giveaway Sites and Free Game Keys Safe? How to Spot Fake Offers
Free games are popular, and so are scams that copy them. This guide explains where free game offers come from, which red flags to watch for and what to do if you already clicked something you should not have.
Where free game offers come from
- The store itself. Steam, Epic, GOG and itch.io post their own free promotions. These are the most reliable source.
- Aggregators. Sites such as GamerPower collect live giveaways in one list and link to the store or launcher. GameSavr uses GamerPower’s public API for its Free Now list.
- Publishers and streamers. Some give away keys directly, usually through their own official channels.
- Random social posts and key generators. This is where most scams live.
How GameSavr handles giveaways
We list offers from GamerPower and link to each one. The button opens GamerPower’s link, which forwards you to the store or launcher page. We cannot verify every single listing, so the safest habit is to check the page you land on before you sign in or click anything.
Red flags
- The page asks for your password anywhere except the store’s official sign-in page.
- It asks for card details, even for a “free” game.
- It wants you to install software, a browser extension or a “launcher” you have not heard of.
- You have to complete surveys, install apps or share the offer before you get the key.
- The address is a near copy of a known store, with a misspelling or an extra word.
- It promises a very expensive new release for free with no end date.
A quick safety check before you claim
- Look at the address bar. Is it the real store domain you expect?
- Sign in only on the store’s own page. Open the store yourself if you are unsure.
- Make sure the offer states $0 and an end date, and that nothing asks you to pay.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for each store account.
- Keep your system and browser up to date.
What to do if you entered your password or installed something
- Change the password for that account, then for any account that shares it.
- Turn on two-factor authentication and sign out of all other devices.
- Run a security scan on your computer.
- Contact the store’s support if anything unusual appears on your account.
Frequently asked questions
Is GamerPower legit?
It is a giveaway aggregator that lists offers and forwards you to the store. We use its public API as a data source, but we do not audit each listing, so apply the checks above to every offer, as you would with any aggregator.
Are free game key generators safe?
No. They cannot produce working keys and are commonly used to distribute malware or steal logins.
Why do publishers give away free keys?
To promote a game, reward fans or reach new players. Genuine giveaways come from the publisher’s or store’s official accounts, not from strangers.
Can a free key be revoked?
Yes, if it was obtained improperly or the offer terms are broken. Games claimed through an official store promotion stay in your library.
Are free keys tied to a region?
Sometimes. Read the offer details for region limits before you spend time on it.
